The Chrysanthemum Global International Forever Stamp was created to cover the postage for a one-ounce international letter to any country served by First-Class Mail International.
The design features a striking close-up of a pink chrysanthemum set against a simple white background. Hong Vo was the photographer of this stamp image.
The official release was originally scheduled for the WESTPEX Stamp Show in Burlingame, California. Due to CVOID-19, there was no official ceremony for the stamp.
Chrysanthemums are also called “mums” and are a favorite among gardeners and florists. They are the most grown flower in the U.S. and are sometimes called the “Queen of Fall Flowers.”
But their story begins much earlier. Chrysanthemums were first cultivated in China more than 3,000 years ago. Over time, they made their way to Japan, where they gained deep cultural meaning. In Japanese tradition, chrysanthemums symbolize joy, longevity, and the sun. The flower is so respected that it’s used as a symbol of the imperial family, earning the name “Chrysanthemum Throne.”
By the 1600s, over 500 varieties of chrysanthemums had been recorded. Today, they remain popular around the world. These flowers can tolerate cooler temperatures better than many others.
They’re not just decorative, either. In many Asian cultures, chrysanthemum petals are used to brew tea. While the leaves are sometimes added to soups or stir-fries.
Choosing the chrysanthemum for a Global Forever stamp makes perfect sense. It’s a flower that’s recognized and cherished in many parts of the world. It is a fitting symbol for international connection.
