The Castillo de San Marcos Stamp was made to pay for USPS Priority Mail and to honor the beautiful and historic Castillo de San Marcos. It’s one of America’s oldest forts and a special piece of our country’s history.
When this stamp was released, no ceremony was held due to Covid-19. It was officially issued in Florida, the same city where the Castillo de San Marcos has stood for centuries.
It is a part of stamp collection that started in 2008. Each stamp in the series has a feature well known in the U.S that was illustrated by artist Dan Cosgrove.
The Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest stone fort in the United States. It was built by the Spanish and took 23 years to complete. Over time, it passed through different hands. Spain controlled it first, then it was taken over by Britain and returned to Spain. Finally, it became part of the United States in 1821. After that, it was renamed Fort Marion and served as a U.S. Army post for many years.
The fort is shaped like a star. It was built with a special kind of rock. This rock is made from tiny seashells. The builders got it from Anastasia Island. Even after over 325 years, the fort is still standing strong.
Today, the Castillo de San Marcos is a national monument. It’s taken care of by the National Park Service. Many people visit the fort to learn about its history. This stamp was made to honor the fort and to remind us how Spain helped shape the early history of the United States.
