The 2022 US Flags Forever Postage Stamp was created to carry on the proud tradition of showing the American flag on U.S. postage. It’s a symbol of pride, unity, and the values the country stands for.
The artwork on the stamp was created by illustrator Laura Stutzman, who is known for her beautiful and thoughtful designs.
To create this image, Laura used three different photos of the same flag taken just seconds apart. She combined them into one powerful image that captures movement and life.
The stamp was officially released in Findlay, Ohio—also known as “Flag City, USA.” It was a fitting place to celebrate the launch of a stamp that honors the American flag.
This set includes six different stamps, each showing the American flag in a slightly different way. The small design changes in each stamp give them their own unique character.
A woman named Glynis Seeley once said, “You don’t know what the [American] flag really means until you’ve been handed a folded one.” She was talking about the flag given to the family of a fallen service member.
During military funerals, the flag is folded by members of the same branch the soldier served in. It's then handed to the next of kin with these heartfelt words:
“On behalf of the President of the United States, [the branch of service], and a grateful nation, please accept this flag as a symbol of our appreciation for your loved one’s honorable and faithful service.”
The flag is folded 13 times, each fold has a special meaning, honoring life, parents, faith, veterans, and more. It’s first folded lengthwise twice, with the stars on top. Then, triangle folds are made until the flag forms a neat triangle, with the end tucked in.
This shape is meant to resemble the tri-corner hats worn during the Revolutionary War—a nod to the very beginning of America’s journey.
