Why this stamp was issued

To continue the USPS’s popular Love Series, a set of stamps meant for year-round sentiments, not just Valentine’s Day.

Design at a glance

A colorful digital illustration spells out “LOVE,” with each letter in two tones. The artwork adds three large two-tone hearts, one small single-color heart, a rectangle, and an arch for playful balance.

First Day of Issue

The ceremony was held virtually due to COVID-19. The First Day of Issue cancellation came from Loveland, Colorado, home of the famous Valentine Re-mailing Program. Each year since 1947, people send their valentines to Loveland to be hand-stamped with a cachet, a yearly contest-selected verse, and a special cancel. The town re-mails 160,000+ cards annually, and the Loveland postmarks are beloved by collectors.

About the Love Series stamps

  • The first Love stamp debuted in 1973.
  • Another wasn’t released until 1982, and issues were sporadic for a few years.
  • In 1987, USPS officially declared it a series.
  • New Love stamps have appeared nearly every year since.

They typically stay on sale longer than other commemoratives and are printed in larger quantities, with occasional additional print runs when demand is high.

USPS encourages their use for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, and any special occasion.

A love story the stamp evokes

From Antony and Cleopatra to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, history brims with great romances. In modern times, few are as cherished as Johnny Cash and June Carter.
They met backstage at the Grand Ole Opry in July 1956. Both were accomplished performers; Carter later toured as a backup singer with Cash.

Married in February 1968, they had one son. Cash often credited Carter with helping him overcome addiction. The couple shared more than three decades together and passed away just four months apart, a love story for the ages.
